We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, and that they only constitute the Divine rule and Christian faith and practice.
What is Theology?
The study of God’s word. Faith seeking understanding.Centered on Christ.
What is Doctrine?
System of belief important as a criteria of membership.
What is Dogma?
Distinctive tenets of religious truth established by divine revelation and defined by the church as essential.
What is revelation?
Unveiling, The uncovering of knowledge beyond human power to attain.
What is inspiration?
the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative
What is General/Natural Revelation?
Available to everyone: senses, perceptions. Available through nature.
What is Supernatural/special revelation
Reality of sin and its corruption. Desire for re-creation: the restored relationship between God and people. Possibility of redemption through Jesus Christ, the revelation of God in the flesh.
What is the Septuagint?
Greek translation of the Old Testament, Attributed to seventy Jewish scholars, Alexandria – 3RD Century BC
What is the Apocrypha?
Hidden Writings, not recognized as inspired writings that were not included in the Jewish cannon. Some churches recognize them but we do not.
What is the Pentateuch?
First five books of the Bible, Torah, Jewish Cannon.
What books are the Pentateuch?
Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy
What are the Sections of OT (Hebrew Canon)?
the Torah (Law) The Prophets(Former prophets’ –History, Latter prophets, Book of the Twelve – Minor prophets) The ‘Writings’ (Sacred literature: Poetry, history, wisdom, apocalyptic)
What is the Sections of NT canon?
Gospels (Written record of Jesus’ life & teaching)
Epistles (Instruction to churches/believers)
History (Acts)
Apocalyptic (Revelation)
What are the sources of biblical authority?
2 Timothy 3:16
Internal Evidence (Consistency of a central theme despite multiple writers over centuries. Witness of individual prophets & apostles. Witness of Christ himself)
External Evidence (Archaeology Ex. Dead Sea Scrolls-
Witness of the Church: Church does not bestow authority, but recognized authority, and placed itself in submission to God’s word written. Dealing with crises and heresies.-
