Do Atoms Matter? Flashcards
What is an ion?
An atom or group of atoms in which the number of electron s is different from the number of protons. If the number of electrons is less than the number of protons, the particle is a positive ion, also called a cation
What are valence electrons?
Electrons available to be gained, lost or shared to form chemical bonds
What are chemical bonds?
A mutual attraction between the nuclei and valence electrons of different atoms that bonds atoms together
What do metals alway lose?
Electrons - Anions
What do non metals always gain?
Electrons - Cation
What is a covalent bond?
Is electron sharing and forming a strong chemical bond. Covalent bonds only occur between nonmetals. . Non metals satisfy this rule by sharing electrons. That way all atoms can “pretend” they have 8 electrons by getting close to each other. This closeness forms the bonds.
Covalent Bond relating to Noble Gases
Covalent bonding also works on the premise that all atoms “want” to have a full outer shell, the stable electron configuration of the Noble gases, satisfying the octet rule. That way all atoms can “pretend” they have 8 electrons by getting close to each other. This closeness forms the bonds.
