DNS Servers and IP Addresses Flashcards
What is a DNS Server?
A DNS server is a database that holds domain names and associated IP addresses
Step by step how DNS AND IP WORK TOGETHER
1)Our web browser sends a request to the local DNS server to convert our domain name (www.facebook.com) into an IP address so we can fetch the web page.
2) If the local DNS server does not have that domain name in its database then the request is forwarded to a higher level DNS server.
3) If a higher level DNS server has the domain name and matching IP address then it is sent back to the lower server to keep a copy and then back to our web browser.
4) The request continues to more DNS servers until the domain name is found or the request fails.
