DNA Vocab Flashcards
DNA
A double stranded, helical nucleic acid molecule capable of replicating and determining the inherited structure of a cell’s proteins.
Deoxyribose
A five-component sugar that is a component of DNA nucleotides
Purine
A class of nucleotides that includes adenine and guanine
Pyrimidine
A class of nucleotides that includes cytosine, thyamine, and uracil.
Helicase
An enzyme that untwists the double helix of DNA at the replication forks, separating the two strands and making them available as template strands.
DNA Polymerase
An enzyme that catalyzes the elongation of new DNA at a replication fork by the addition of nucleotides to the existing chain.
Base-Pairing
The rules stating that in DNA cytosine pairs with guanine and adenine pairs with thymine and that in RNA cytosine pairs with guanine and adenine pairs with uracil
RNA
A type of nucleic acid consisting of nucleotide monomers with a ribose sugar and the nitrogenous bases adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), and uracil (U); usually single-stranded; functions in protein synthesis, gene regulation, and as the genome of some viruses.
Nucleotide
Repeating monomers in DNA and RNA; consist of a phosphate group, 5-carbon sugar, and a nitrogen base
Nucleic Acid
CHONP - used for genetic information storage (DNA), interpreting genetic info (RNA), and also the source of cellular energy to do anything for everything alive.
