DNA transcription Flashcards
pathway to make proteins
DNA-> mRNA -> tRNA and ribosomes ->protein
transcription is
the process of copying the sequence of one strand of DNA, the template strand, in the nucleus
who copies the template strand of DNA?
mRNA
role of RNA polymerase
- binds to DNA at promotors and separates the strands
- then uses one strand of DNA to add complementary nucleotides to mRNA
what are promotors?
regions in DNA where RNA polymerase must bond to begin transcription
what is the promotor sequence box?
the TATA box
terminal signals are
act as a signal to stop transcription
mRNA processing is
the editing of the mRNA chain to make it functional
introns
non functional parts of mRNA that are taken out
exons
functional parts of mRNA that are kept on the strand
ligase role in mRNA processing
joins the exons together after introns have been taken out
after exons are joined together,
a GTP (guanine triphosphate) cap added to 5’ and a poly A tail added to 3’ end
