DNA to protein Flashcards
what are the three types of RNA?
messenger RNA (mRNA), ribosomal RNA (rRNA), transfer RNA (tRNA)
what does messenger RNA do?
brings instructions from DNA in the nucleus to the cytoplasm
what does transfer RNA do?
bonds the mRNA and uses the instructions to assemble the amino acids in the correct order
what does transfer RNA do?
delivers amino acids to the ribosomes to be assembled into a protein
DNA can not leave the nucleus but RNA can during what?
transcription
what is the first step of transcription?
enzyme unzips the DNA molecule
what is the second step of transcription?
free RNA nucleotides pair up with nucleotides on the strand of DNA
what Is the third step of transcription?
the mRNA strand leaves the nucleus and enters the cytoplasm
what is translation?
converting info in the sequence of mRNA codons into the sequence of amino acids in proteins
what is the first step of translation?
mRNA travels through the cytoplasm and attaches to line ribosomes
what is the second step of translation?
tRNA carries amino acids to the ribosomes
what is the third step in translation?
tRNA uses anticodons to translate the codons into an amino acid sequence and connects them to make a protein
what are the two stages of DNA to protein?
transcription and translation
where does translation take place?
cytoplasm at the ribosome
where does transcription take place?
nucleus
