DNA Structure and Function Flashcards
What does DNA stand for?
Deoxyribonucleic Acid
What is DNA?
DNA is present in all cells of living organisms.
Where is DNA found in eukaryotes?
In the nucleus.
Where is DNA found in prokaryotes?
Floating throughout the cell.
What is a nucleotide?
The building block of DNA, consisting of three parts.
What are the three parts of a nucleotide?
- Sugar (deoxyribose)
- Phosphate group
- Nitrogen base
What is the shape of DNA?
DNA has a double helix shape.
What are the monomers and polymers of nucleic acids?
Monomers: Nucleotides
Polymers: DNA and RNA
What type of sugar is found in DNA?
Deoxyribose, a 5-carbon sugar.
What bonds with the sugar in a nucleotide?
The phosphate group.
What forms the backbone of DNA?
The sugar-phosphate connection.
What are nitrogen bases?
Nitrogen bases code for genetic information.
What are purines?
Purines are nitrogen bases with 2 rings: A-Adenine and G-Guanine.
Example mnemonic: “Apples in the tree”
What are pyrimidines?
Pyrimidines are nitrogen bases with 1 ring: C-Cytosine and T-Thymine.
What are complementary strands in DNA?
Complementary strands of DNA stick with their complementary base pairs. A pairs with T and C pairs with G.
