DNA (Structure and function) Flashcards
Nucleotides
Joined monomers that make up DNA.
What are Nucleotides made up of.
1 phosphate, 1 five-carbon sugar, 1 nitrogenous base
Replication
Copying of DNA to produce two identical DNA molecules, Happens during the ‘S’ phase of the cell cycle before division, Super wound into chromosomes right before cell division
DNA Helicase
Unzip the DNA molecule by breaking the hydrogen bonds between the strands.
DNA Polymerases
Enzymes that attach to the template strand of DNA at the replication forks and follows the base pairing rules
DNA Polymerase
Joins nucleotides to synthesize a new complementary strand of DNA, Also proofreads for each new DNA strand
Ligase
Finishes (Double checks) the proofreading
Primase
synthesizes RNA primers during DNA replication
Steps of replication
1: Seperates the 2 DNA strands, 2: Synthesize a complementary DNA strand, 3: Proofread
