DNA shit lolz Flashcards
What was Chargaffs discovery?
There is significant DNA variation between species, thus DNA could be the genetic material.
What are chargaff’s rules?
First Rule:
[A] = [T] and [G] = [C]
Second Rule:
The composition of DNA varies between species
What is the X-ray diffraction pattern of DNA?
- Helical structure
- Bases perpendicular to the length of the DNA molecule
- Double stranded
What are pyrimidines?
Cytosine and thymine
What are purines?
Adenine and guanine
What is the difference between RNA and DNA molecular on the 2nd carbon?
OH group RNA
H group DNA
What is the fromation of the polynecleotide?
Nucleotide monomers are joined together with phosphodiester bonds to form a polynucleotide = nucleic acid
What the formation of the phosphodiester bond?
The hydroxyl group (OH) on the 3rd carbon of one nucleotide reacts with
the phosphate group attached to the 5th carbon on another nucleotide.
Which way are DNA and RNA synthesised?
5’ –> 3’
What is the watson crick model of DNA stucture?
DNA has a double stranded helical structure
The sugar phosphate backbone is on the outside The bases are on the inside
Stabilised by hydrogen bonds
The two polynucleotide strands are orientated in opposite directions
What did the model of the watson and crick provide?
a stimulus for deciphering the
genetic code
a possible mechanism for the
replication of DNA
Why does your cell replicate its DNA?
Because your body needs to make more cells
for growth, repair, pregnancy etc
