DNA RNA Flashcards
What is dna
Genetic material that stores information
What is nucleic acids
The biopolymers or small biomolecules essential to all known forms of life
Where is dna found in a cell?
In the nucleus
What are the two forms of Nucleic acids
DNA and RNA
What is nucleotides?
Makes up the molecules of Nucleic acids. Consist of a phosphate group, a sugar, and a nitrogen base. Found in DNA and RNA
What is Nitrogenous Base?
Part of the structure of nucleotides. Thymine, cytosine, adenine, guanine
What is the DNA’s function
It stores the genetic information. Organisms inherit dna from their biological parents
Genes
Contain instructions for making proteins which are molecules made up of subunits called amino acids
Genome
The complete DNA sequence in each cell of organism
Chromosome
Chromatin condense into structures called chromosomes. DNA exist in the form of Chromatin
Sex Chromosomes
X:X = female, X:Y= male
DNA replication
During DNA replication one DNA strand act is the template and two of the same DNA molecules are formed
Difference between DNA and RNA
DNA provides the code for the cell’s activities, while RNA converts that code into proteins to carry out cellular functions
How many chromosomes are called autosomes?
22 pairs
