DNA replication in S phase Flashcards

Q
DNA REPLECATION IN PHASE S
A
DNA replication occurs during the S phase of the cell cycle. During this phase, the DNA double helix is unwond by an enzyme called helicase, creating two single strands of DNA. Each strand serves as a template for the synthesis of a new complemenntary strand. DNA ploymerase, the main enzyme involved in DNA replication, adds nucleotides to the growing strand 5’ and 3’ (5 prime, 3 prime) direction. Replication proceeds in both directions from the origin of replication until the entire DNA molecule, each consisting of one original strand and one newly synthesized strand.
