DNA replication Flashcards
1
Q
What bond is in a DNA nucleotide?
A
phosphodiester bond
2
Q
What are the bases of DNA?
A
Adenine, Thymine, Guanine and Cytosine
3
Q
Definition of semi-conservative?
A
half of the old strand and half of the new strand
4
Q
Definition of conservative?
A
one of the genes is the old strand and the other is new strands
5
Q
What is the method for DNA replication?
A
- the enzyme helicase unwinds the DNA double helix
- DNA polymerase synthesises a new DNA strand in the 5’ to 3’ direction
- another DNA polymerase molecule attaches to the ‘lagging’ strand
- DNA is synthesised in the 5’ to 3’ direction
- helicase continues to unwind the DNA double helix
- continues synthesis and it proceeds on the ‘leading’ strand
