DNA Replication Flashcards
DNA Helicase
Breaks hydrogen bonds to separate the strands of DNA forming template strands
DNA Ligase
Seals the gaps between the Okazaki fragments to create one continuous DNA strand
DNA Pol 1
Removes RNA primers and replaces it with newly synthesized DNA
DNA Pol 3
Adds nucleotides in 5’-3’ direction (3’-5’ direction of template strand)
Primase
Synthesizes RNA primers needed to start replication
Leading Strand
Begins in the direction towards the replication fork. Extends from a primer.
Lagging strand
Small Okazaki fragments extended away from replication fork. Requires primer to start synthesis
Transcription
DNA is transcribed into an RNA copy
Translation
MRNA is translated into a polypeptide at the ribosome
Prokaryotic gene structure parts
Promoter, coding region, terminator, regulatory sequence
