DNA and RNA Flashcards
1
Q
What are DNA Nucleotides made up of?
A
Nitrogenous Base
Phosphate Group
Deoxyribose Pentose Sugar
2
Q
How do Nucleotides join together?
A
Condensation reaction
Phosphodiester bond
3
Q
How does the Structure of DNA help it to do its job?
A
Sugar-phosphate backbone gives strength
Coiling gives compact shape
Long molecule allows large amount of information
Complementary base pairing enables information to be replicated
Double helix makes molecule stable
Bases held together by H bonds - many H bonds provides strength

Q
What are RNA Nucleotides made up of?
A
Nitrogenous Base
Phosphate Group
Ribose Pentose Sugar
5
Q
What are the steps of DNA Replication?
A
- DNA Helicase helps chains separate, breaking H bonds
- Nucleotides line up with complementary bases and join to template strand
- DNA polymerase joins nucleotides together in 5’ to 3’ direction
- DNA polymerase is specific-active site only binds to 3’ end
- Phosphodiester bonds form
