DNA Flashcards
How is DNA arranged?
DNA is arranged into long strands called chromosomes. Each chromosome contains sections of DNA which code for particular characteristics. (E.g. Hair colour, eye colour)
What is DNA?
DNA is a molecule found in almost every cell at all times. It is found in the nucleus of a cell. Everyone’s DNA is unique.
What are genes?
Genes are found in the sections of DNA which are inside the chromosomes. They code for particular proteins.
How many pairs of chromosomes do we have?
23 pairs. (46 altogether)
What do you inherit from your parents when you are born?
You inherit half of your mum’s chromosomes and half of your dad’s. Which is why we inherit similarities.
What is DNA’s structure?
DNA is made up of two strands that pair up to form another and then twist round to form a double helix shape.
What is DNA made up of?
DNA is made up of four bases. A,G,C and T.
the bases of one strand pair up with the bases of another strand.
What do the order of the bases determine?
The order of the bases makes a code. This determines the characteristics of different species.
What did RosalindFranklin and Maurice Wilkins do?
They produced high resolution x-ray photographs of crystallised DNA fibres.
Who solved the structure of DNA?
Watson and Crick solved the structure of DNA. They used the x- ray photographs that Franklin and Williams produced- which led to them discovering that DNA was a double helix shape.
