Biotechnology Flashcards
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose= ethanol + carbon dioxide (+energy)
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen= water + carbon dioxide (+energy)
How is bread made?
The yeast in the dough is left to respire. The sugars in the dough respire to make ethanol and carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is trapped in the bubbles, making it rise.
The dough is then baked, the ethanol evaporates off and the bubbles of the gas expand, making it rise further.
How are alcoholic drinks made?
They are made when the yeast ferments into grape sugars (wine) or malted barley (beer). When the yeast has fermented, it is left in a sea,ed container to keep out oxygen and other microorganisms. The mixture is then left until all the sugars have fermented into alcohol. Finally, the sediment is removed (by filtration) and is bottled/ put in barrels ready to use.
What is the effect of temperature in the process of fermentation?
The effect of temperature is very important. If the temperature is too low, then the heat will not be able to grow. If the temperature is too high, then the fermentation will stop. So the temperature should be just right.
How is bacteria fermented?
The bacterium feeds on the lactose in the milk. Lactose in then converted into lactic acid, by fermentation. The pH of milk goes down during fermentation as it becomes more acidic.
What is biotechnology?
Biotechnology is the use of biological processes or organisms to create useful products.
