DNA Flashcards
describe the structure of a DNA mononucleotide
a deoxyribose molecule, phosphate group and an organic base joined together by condensation reactions
describe how DNA molecules join together to form a DNA polymer/strand
condensation reaction between the sugar of one nucleotide and the phosphate of the next one
(phosphodiester bond)
describe how RNA mononucleotides join together to form an RNA polymer/strand
phosphodiester bonds between a phosphate and a sugar
describe how DNA forms a double helix
-In a DNA molecule there are 2 polynucleotide strands twisted around each other
-they form a double helix
-the sugars and phosphates are on the outside (hydrophillic phosphate groups on the very outside of the molecule
-the bases point inwards and are joined by H bonds
-2 polynucleotide strands antiparallel as they run in opposite directions
describe the structure of an RNA mononucleotide
a phosphate, ribose sugar and uracil base
