DNA Flashcards
Who discovered the Double Helix?
Francis Crick and James Watson
Who took Photo 51?
Rosaline Franklin
What is the Erwin Chargaff Rule?
The amount of adenine (A) is equal to the amount of thymine (T), and the amount of guanine (G) is equal to the amount of cytosine (C), this is known as base pairing.
Who won the Nobel Prize and for what?
James Watson, Francis Crick, and Maurice Williams won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962 (9 years after their discovery).
When was the Double Helix discovered?
DNA was discovered on February 28, 1953.
What does DNA look like?
DNA looks and has the consistency of snot.
What is a Nucleotide?
A Nucleotide is a molecule that is made up of :
- nitrogenous base pair
- deoxyribose sugar
- phosphate
(backbone of a double helix)
What are nitrogenous bases?
(A) Adenine
(T) Thymine
(C) Cytosine
(G) Guanine
What are the nitrogenous base pair?
(A) adenine = (T) thymine
(C) Cytosine = (G) Guanine
What does deoxyribose sugar/phosphate do?
It binds with nitrogenous bases to create a nucleotide.
Hydrogen bonds?
(A) Adenine - (T) Thymine = 2 hydrogen bonds
(C) Cytosine - (G) Guanine = 3 hydrogen bonds
Chromosomes?
Are structures in our cells that contain our DNA, they carry genetic information and determine our traits.
What do Arteries do?
Carries blood away from the heart to all the body’s tissue.
What do Veins do?
Carries deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart.
Antigens
Anything that stimulates an immune response.
