Divine Epithets scholarly views Flashcards
1
Q
Sourvinou-Inwood (1997)
A
Unitarian View- different epithets are for different aspects of the same god. Evidence- Panathenaic inscription; Herodotus King Croesus.
2
Q
Mikalson (1983)
A
Separative view- different epithets represent different gods, due to being worshipped differently by different people. Evidence to support- Xenophon’s writings about Socrates agreeing.
3
Q
Versnel (2011)
A
Combinative view- the meaning of epithets changed according to circumstances. Believes that the Greeks would accept with one epithet the same as Zeus with a different epithet but that cultic worship aligned with the separatist view.
