What was the shrine of Zeus Ktesios?
protector of property and wealth. Located in storeroom. Was a two-handled jar filled with olive oil, seeds and water.
what is the shrine Zeus Herkeios?
‘Zeus of the fence’ Protected the house. Stood in the courtyard. Depicted with a snake to warn off evil.
what is the shrine Apollo Agyeios?
Protected the house from harm. Was a statue or a pillar by the door.
Why was the hearth important?
It was dedicated to Hestia, who looked after family members. The hearth was a sacred place, where rituals occurred (e.g. gathered round when child born).
what was the herm?
A rectangular prism with Hermes’ head on top and a phallus below. Would ward off evil spirits.
What was the role of the father?
Head of the family so lead the family religion. Performed ceremonies at Oikos shrines. Could do ‘their own way’ to some extent.
What was the role of mothers?
Their key role was preparing bodies for burial. Women were expected to have children and they prayed for divine assistance.
