Anger and reconciliations Flashcards
What is Graziosi’s view on Achilles’ anger?
Achilles acts like an “insulted deity”. He compares how Achilles and Apollo react to being insulted. They both cause suffering of more than the one who insulted them. When Apollo is apologised to, he stops the suffering but when Achilles is apologised to, he does not yield. Argues that Achilles is driven more by arrogance than Apollo. However, doesn’t blame Achilles for not accepting the apology as he saw Odysseus as angering him. Talks about how Achilles is mirrored in the story of Gilgamesh. Writes about Jonathon Shay comparing Achilles to modern-day soldiers. Suggests that people can only live a good life if they look after others.
What was Rapin’s view of Achilles and his anger?
Is disappointed that Achilles is driven by love rather than virtue. Saw Achilles as petty, too emotional and his anger as an overreaction. Saw Achilles as a bad hero as too violent and lazy.
What is Griffin’s view on the reconciliation of Priam and Achilles?
Says that it allows great opponents to meet at a level where they can see the ‘fundamental condition of the life of man’. Suggesting that the moral message of the Iliad is to show the beauty that the suffering has exposed.
What is Nizharadze’s view on Priam and Achilles reconciliation?
Says that Priam is highly regarded by Homer and that he is able to curb his emotions and behave well in difficult situations (b24).
