A
Inflammation of diverticula (outpouchings of the gut wall) found commonly in the sigmoid colon

What are the risk factors for diverticula? (4)
A
Low fibre diet Obesity Smoking NSAIDs Age > 50

What are the clinical presentations of diverticulitis? (4)
A
Severe L iliac fossa pain
Tenderness, guarding and rigidity on L
Fever
Constipation

How would you diagnose diverticulitis?
A
CT colonoscopy (not performed during acute attack)

How would you treat diverticulitis? (3)
A
HIGH FIBRE DIET
Smooth muscle relaxants: mebeverine
Antibiotics: ciprofloxacin + metronidazole
