Allergic (T-cell) reaction to gluten, wheat, rye, barley
What can coeliac disease result in?
Malabsorption
What is coeliac disease associated with? (2)
HLA DQ2
Autoimmune disease
What are the clinical presentations of coeliac disease? (5)
Diarrhoea Anaemia Steatorrhoea Weight loss Failure to thrive (children)
How would you diagnose coeliac disease? (3)
Decreased B12, ferritin
IgA anti-transglutaminases
Duodenal biopsy: villous atrophy, crypt hyperplasia, increased intraepithelial leukocytes
What is the first-line treatment for coeliac disease?
Gluten-free diet (lifelong)
Patient’s struggle to adhere to this but minimal + inadvertent exposure to gluten has no immediate serious consequences
How would you manage coeliac disease? (3)

DEXA scan - osteoporotic risk
