Diverticulitis Presentation
A
- Left lower quadrant pain starting in hypogastrum (right sided in asian patients)
- Tenderness in left lower quadrant, palpable abdominal mass or distention on examination
- Pain may be intermittent and associated with altered bowel habit
- Previous Hx

A
- Other causes of acute abdomen
- IBS
- Appendicitis
- Crohn’s

Diverticulitis Ix
A
- Bloods
- Contrast CT scan required within 24hrs for those with raised inflammatory markers

Diverticulitis Management
A
- High fibre diet for life
- Hospital admission when; pain cannot be managed with paracetamol, person is frail, large rectal bleed, symptoms persist at home, severe symptoms develop
- If systemically unwell offer oral co-amoxiclav
- Paracetamol for pain (not NSAIDS)
- if in hospital; IV co-amoxiclav
- 15-30% will need surgery
