Diversity & Richness Flashcards
Species diversity:
A measure of the number of individuals (abundance) of each species, as well as the number of species.
Species richness:
The number of species at a site.
Species richness is a measure of the NUMBER of species at a site, whereas species diversity is a measure of the
ABUNDANCE of individuals of each species, as well as the number of species.
Alpha diversity:
The number of species within a habitat.
Beta diversity:
The number of habitats within the region.
Gamma diversity:
The number of species in a region, which includes several communities.
Gamma diversity =
Alpha diversity x beta diversity
Genetic diversity:
The genetic variation that exists within a species.
The conservation of genetic diversity is important because a
Population with plenty of genetic variation will be more likely to have the appropriate genes to adapt and therefore survive if conditions suddenly change, compared to a population with little variation.
