Coexistence Flashcards
Interspecific competition:
Competition between individuals of different species.
Can occur through reduced competition between individuals by
The partitioning of resources, such as space and time.
Temporal partitioning / specialisation:
Some groups are active by day, others by night. This avoids competition.
Eg - day flying butterflies and night flying moths.
Spatial partitioning / specialisation:
Different levels of vertical zones, such as above the canopy, in the canopy, 15-25m zone, the understory, forest floor.
Also demonstrated by the different niches of rainforest mammals.
Food partitioning / specialisation:
Food resource is shared between communities, reducing interspecific competition.
Eg - Different hummingbirds are adapted to feed on different flowers of shapes and sizes as they have different beak shapes and sizes.
Breeding sites: Frogs (5)
Frog communities have different ways to lay eggs, including In water, On vegetation, In soil depressions, In foam nests in vegetation, On the back of the female.
