What is diversity and inclusion
Barry Cullen Head of diversity and inclusion at the RICS coined Diversity and inclusion as “Respecting and valuing differences, with a commitment to equal treatment and equal opportunity, ensures that firms can deliver policies and outcomes which are fair and transparent”
What are the benifits of having a diverse team
employees will have different characteristics and backgrounds, they are also more likely to have a variety of different skills and experiences. This leads to the following benifits;
- Variety of different perspectives,
- Increased creativity,
- Higher innovation,
- Faster problem-solving,
- Better decision making,
- Higher employee engagement,
- Reduced employee turnover,
- Better company reputation.
How is your team diverse
We have a team made up of people from different backgrounds; military, on the tools, rural, london, graduates which all bring a different perspective and a viriaty of skills to the team.
What is Unconcious Bias
The Precision issue of Modus titled “Workplace diversity: Addressing unconscious bias: Psychologists tell us that our unconscious biases are simply down to our natural people preferences. Biologically we are hard-wired to prefer people who look like us, sound like us and share our interests.”
How to overcome unconcious bias;
The Precision issue of Modus titled “Workplace diversity: Addressing unconscious bias” suggested;
- Consider reverse mentoring for senior staff members who are set in their ways,
- Recognising and managing your biases,
- Recognise how you’re thinking about a situation: is your decision based on rationale or feelings,
- Implement a mentoring programme particularly for under-represented groups.
What are the protected characteristics
The protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010 are;
- age,
- disability,
- gender reassignment,
- race, religion or belief,
- sex,
- sexual orientation,
- marriage and civil partnership,
- pregnancy and maternity

The Act provides a legal framework to protect the rights of individuals and advance equality of opportunity for all
