What is the Tuckman Theory?

A

Focuses on how a team approaches a task.

Forming - assembling a team, planning and collating information

Storming - Address task by suggesting ideas, strong facilitative leadership crucial.

Norming - Agreeing rules and values of operation.

Performing - Identified by high levels of independence, motivation, knowledge and competence. Decision making is collaborative.

Adjourning/Transforming - End of the project and breakup of the team.

A

Diversity in the workplace relates to the acceptance and inclusion of all employees of all backgrounds.

Ensuring diversity in the workplace, is an important asset of an organisation as it acknowledges the individual strength of each employee and the potential they bring.

What are some advantages of a diverse team?

A

Increased productivity - diversity of talent will result in a broad range of skills amongst the team and result in increased productivity.

Increased creativity - differing skill sets and perspectives within the team will increase the chance of generating solutions to workplace problems.

Improved cultural awareness - A diverse range of cultures within the workplace allows companies to operate more effectively within a global market place.

A positive reputation - Companies that have a diverse workplace are often perceived as better employers. Potential employees want an employer who accepts and is tolerant of all backgrounds and who treats their employees fairly.

What are inclusive environments?

A

A culturally inclusive environment requires mutual respect, effective relationships, clear communication, understanding of expectations and critical self-reflection.

Within an inclusive environment, people of all cultural orientations can freely express who they are, their own opinions and points of view.

A

A

Types of discrimination

A

Direct - less favourable treatment directly because of a protected characteristic.

Indirect - when everyone is treated the same but people with a protected characteristic are put at a disadvantage

Harassment - unwanted or offensive behaviour related to a protected characteristic

Victimisation - negative treatment as a result of being involved with a discrimination or harassment complaint.

I try to ensure the teams I work on are inclusive by making sure I make every member feel important and listen to the opinions of all regardless of their seniority.

A

I make sure I am including all members of the team during discussions and making sure everyone feels a valued part of the team.

I am also aware of unconscious bias and how this can impact diversity and inclusion so I try to ensure I do not let any unconscious bias affect my decisions.
