Diversity-
quality of being diverse/different
Culture-
all socially transmitted behaviors, beliefs, & thoughts by particular group of people; everything you don’t see
Globalization-
when people cross boarded that result in nations, societies, & individuals becoming more multicultural
Socioeconomic-
based on social class or financial standing
Ethnicity-
group of people who identify with each other based on shared attributes distinguishing them from other groups
Ethnicity attributes-
traditions, ancestry, language, history, society, culture, or religion
Gender-
describes biologic/chromosomal sexual identity of an individual (male/female)
Sexual orientation-
mental, physical, or sexual attraction to one or both genders
Age-
-Infant (birth-1 year, toddlers, preschoolers, adolescent), Young Adult, Middle Aged, Mature
-Baby boomers- 1946-1964
-Generation X- 1965-1980
-Generation Y- 1981-1999
-Generation Z- 2000-Present
Religion-
different dominations are present even in a specific religion
Family structure-
based on relationships of individuals within a household
Single parent-
divorced/never married
Foster parent-
legal guardians, state, adopted parents
Blended-
1 biologic parent & another parent figure, unmarried biologic parents
Polyamorous parents-
multiple romantic partners in household, LGBT Parents, & non-parent relatives
Lifestyle choice-
health & fitness, education & materialistic
Medical condition-
physical/mental disabilities
Assimilation-
people of diverse backgrounds slowly give up original culture & identify/melt into another culture
Biculturalism-
being able to negotiate 2+ cultures competently
Epidemiology-
study & analysis of distribution patterns & determinants of health & disease conditions in population
Population health management-
process of improving clinical health outcomes of defined group of individuals through improved care coordination, & patient engagement
Cultural competency-
possessing a set of attitudes, behaviors, & policies that come together in an agency, system, or profession that enable effective interactions in a multi-cultural environment
5 elements required for cultural competence-
1.) value of diversity
2.) ability to identify & asses your own cultural diversity
3.) ability to institutionalize cultural knowledge
4.) having a consciousness of the dynamics of cross cultural interactions
5.) ability to adapt service delivery that reflects an understanding of a multicultural environment
Bias/prejudice-
thinking negatively of others without any justification
Ethnocentrism-
making false assumptions of others ways based on your own limited experiences
Racism-
belief that one race is superior to another
Discrimination-
actions involved in unequal treatment of people because they belong to a certain group
Stereotyping-
generalized belief about a particular category of people
Institutionalizing-
integrating it into education or work
Ethics-
systematic study of rightness & wrongness of human conduct & character
ARRT code of ethics-
serves as a guide for certificate holders to evaluate their professional conduct as it relates to patients, healthcare consumers, employers, colleagues, & other members of healthcare team
