Diversity: Classification Flashcards
What are the biological criteria for life?
Made of cells, obtain and use energy, grow and develop, reproduce, respond to their environment, and adapt to their environment.
What is taxonomy?
The science of identifying and classifying all organisms (both living and fossilized).
What are the four main aspects of taxonomy?
- Morphology (physical traits)
- Behavior
- Geographic location
- Genetics
What are the two types of cells?
Prokaryotic and eukaryotic
What are prokaryotic cells?
Cells that lack a nucleus or membrane bound organelles.
What are eukaryotic cells?
Cells that contain a nucleus and has membrane bound organelles.
What are the modes of nutrition?
Heterotrophic or autotrophic
What are heterotrophic organisms?
Organisms that cannot synthesize their own food therefore they must eat or absorb it.
What are autotrophic organisms?
Organisms that can produce their own food (photosynthesis or chemosynthesis)
What is asexual reproduction?
Involves a single parent, offspring are identical.
What is sexual reproduction?
Involved two parents, offspring are genetically different.
What are the two types of metabolism?
Aerobic and anaerobic
What is aerobic metabolism?
Respiration with oxygen
What is anaerobig metabolism?
Respiration without oxygen
What are the 6 Kingdoms of organisms?
- Archaebacteria
- Eubacteria
- Protists
- Fungi
- Plantae
- Animalia
