Classifications Between Archaebacteria and Eubacteria Flashcards
What is used to classify archaebacteria?
The environment
What is used to classify eubacteria?
Gram staining
What does gram staining do?
Determines lipid content through the thickness of peptidoglycan and cell membranes.
How does gram staining classify eubacteria?
When the bacteria is gram negative, it is pink, so there are two membranes + thin layers of peptidoglycan. When the bacteria is gram positive, it is purple, so there is one membrane + a thick layer of peptidoglycan.
Gram-positive microorganisms have higher ______________ content, whereas gram-negative organisms have higher ________ content.
peptidoglycan; lipid
Gram-negative eubacteria are less susceptible to antibiotics because….
extra membrane makes it harder to penetrate the cell wall.
Gram-positive eubacteria are more susceptible to antibiotics because….
they only have one membrane.
