What is diversity
Diversity refers to variety or difference
Cultural diversity refers to the different and variety found in societies.
What is intercultural diversity
This means what is within the culture like eating, greeting, clothing, food, language, leisure or behaviours, Ect.
What is intracultural diversity
This means what is around that culture or what is similar to that culture ( variety of norms and values)
The U.K. is seen as an Intracultural diversity, this would include cultures of different ethnic groups, but there is also a diversity of regional culture ( Welsh, Scottish, English, Nothern Ireland) it would be also diversity in age, class, sexual and so on. adding to the range of thing that becomes the ‘Normal’
Cultural hybridity and its link to the UK
A hybrid is a cross between or merging of two or more things. U.K culture is often described as a Cultural hybrid becuase it contains aspects of English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish culture but influences from Asian, Caribbean or U.S. culture and so on.
Cultural hybridity and it’s link to globalisation
In a global Society, hybridity becomes more common. Culture hybridity can best be seen in aspects such as music, fashion and food.
Culture hybridity is often considered in the U.K. in relation to second or thrid generation immigrants who adopt hybrid identities.
Definition of multiculturalism
No single definition
Almost all Western societies are characterised by cultural pluralism - their societies consist of many people of different backgrounds
Examples and debates involving multiculturalism
- Tolerance for different ethnicities and religions
- Encouragement for ethnic minorities to assimilate into the host culture
- Groups living in ‘enclaves’ producing resentment from the host culture
- Have some of the visible differences produced a rise in hate crime and right-wing views
- Muslim women and the hijab
