What is the rural - urban continuum?
The rural-urban continuum is the gradual transition between urban and rural areas
What leads to changes in population structure?
Fertility and mortality rates as well as international and internal migration.
What impact did Empire have on migration to Britain?
Large movements of colonised country’s people. (Britain had pull factors since being heart of empire).
Since been limited and focussed around skilled workers after the 1962 immigration act.
Explain phases of migration to Britain?
- Windrush in the 1940s
- Post WW2 migration
- Ugandans, Asians thrown out by dictators
- 1990s - east europe migration from warzone countries.
Define migration
The movement of a person from one place to another involving a permanent change in address.
What is social clustering?
When a group of people live near eachother due to association of religion or ethnicity etc.
What are the reasons for social clustering?
- Reduces social isolation and increases saftey from racist attacks.
- Access to familiar shops, goods, foods, resturants.
- Increase political power (constituencies)
What are the problems of social clustering?
Social diversity erodes british culture creating tensions.
