Diuretic Flashcards
1
Q
Diuretic General AEs
A
-
GI effects
> N/V/D - Hypotension
-
Dehydration
> fluid volume deficit -
Fluid & electrolyte disturbances
> Na & K - Fluid rebound
2
Q
Diuretics General Overview
MOA
indications
A
-
MOA
> act on kidneys to incr urine output -
Indications
> HTN (reduce intravascular vol)
> Fluid overload/edema (HF, pulmonary edema, kidney/liver failure)
> Glaucoma (dcr IOP)
> Hyperkalemia (remove excess K)
3
Q
Diuretics General Contraindications
A
- Pregnancy/lacation
- Severe renal failure
- Hypotension
- Dehydration
- Drug-Drug:
> Digoxin: incrd K loss may occur
> Anticoags: reduced effectiveness
> Antidiabetics: reduced effectiveness
> Lithium: incrd risk of toxicity
4
Q
Furosemide (Lasix) - Class & MOA
A
- Class: Loop Diuretic
- MOA: inhibits reabsorp of NaCl in loop of Henle which causes a greater degree of diuresis than other diuretics (water follows Na)
5
Q
Furosemide (Lasix) - Indications & Route/Dose
A
-
Indications
> Conditions of fluid overload
> Hyperkalemia -
Route/Dose
> oral
> IVP (slow IVP 20mg/min)
> may be given IM or IV gtt
6
Q
Furosemide - Contraindications
A
- General slide
- Ototoxic drugs
- Sulfa allergy
7
Q
Furosemide - AEs
A
- General slide
- Hypokalemia
- CNS effects: paresthesia, ototoxicity
> IVP slowly to prevent
8
Q
Furosemide - Nursing Considerations
A
- Potassium supplements
- IV = fall risk
- Take in AM
- Daily weight
- Symps of hypotension & hypokalemia = call PCP
- Maintain fluid intake
- Factors of Fluid Loss: diarrhea, vomiting, excessive heat, sweating
