Is defined as the effective and efficient collection, analysis and evaluation of information, relating to characteristics of people and communities, their external milieu and health affecting interventions at individual and collective levels as to enable informed decision making

Decrease infant, child and maternal mortality rate
Improve the effectiveness of health system
Hospital health information system
Focuses on what happens in the gates of the hospital and cannot provide answers about the population health status in the district.
Focuses on that part of the population entering their premises as patients in a patient database.
District health information system
Not restricted to hospital or health facilities.
Targets the district population and various elements that affect their health.
Resources and expertise in the district form a significant base of the entire district
