Distributions Flashcards
normal distribution
symmetrical pattern of frequency data, forms a bell-shaped curve
- mean/median/mode all at the midpoint (highest point) of the curve
skewed distribution
asymmetrical spread of frequency data, data all clusters to one end
- two types: positive skew, negative skew
positive skew
most of the data is concentrated to the right
taller on right, shorter on left
- mode is the tallest point on curve
- median is towards the upper end of the curve
- mean is in the middle of the curve
negative skew
most of the data is concentrated to the left
taller on left, shorter on right
- mode is the tallest point on curve
- median is towards the upper end of the curve
- mean is in the middle of the curve
distributions: ethical issues
misunderstanding findings could lead to incorrect public perception of the findings
may cause biases and discrimination
overcome by clarifying that relationship is correlational not causal
