Descriptive Statistics Flashcards
(18 cards)
descriptive statistics
use of tables, graphs, summary stats to analyse data
e.g. bar chart, histogram
measures of central tendency
any measure which calculates an AVERAGE value within a set of data
mean
total of all values in a data set divided by the number of values
mean: strength
makes use of all values
good for interval data
mean: weakness
influenced by outliers, therefore can be unrepresentative
median
arrange data from lowest to highest then find the central value
median: strength
not affected by outliers
good for ordinal data
median: weakness
not as sensitive as mean
does not use all data
mode
most frequently occurring value in data set
mode: strength
useful for nominal data
mode: weakness
not useful when there are several modes
measures of dispersion
any measure that calculates the variation in a set of data
range
highest score minus lowest score
range: strength
easy to calculate
range: weakness
affected by extreme values
does not use all data
standard deviation
square root of the variance
- low SD means more data is clustered close to the mean, therefore there is less data spread
standard deviation: strength
precise measure
all data values used
standard deviation: weakness
difficult to calculate
affected by extreme values
