Distribution and Prediction of volcanic activity Flashcards
What is pyroclastic flow?
Gravity driven, rapidly moving mixtures of rock fragments and hot gases
How hot can pyroclastic flows be?
900 degrees celcius
What is lahars?
Debris flows that are made up of a mixture of water and particles from clay to boulders and have a viscous consistency of wet concrete
How do lahars form?
they can form by hot phyroclastic flows entering watershed systems or by flowing over snow and ice
How quickly and how far can lahars travel?
they can move up to 40 m/s and as far as 300km
What is tephra falls and ballistic projectiles?
It consists of pyroclastic fragments which ranges from ash to large blocks that ravel through the air and cause large damage
How are volcanoes predicted?
-They are monitored by seismometers and seismographs however there is little to no warning
- ground deformation
- rising groundwater temperature
- releasing of gases
