Disruption Between Endogenous Pacemakers And Exogenous Ziegebers Flashcards
Jet lag
When travelling across a number of time zones the body clock SCN endogenous pacemaker will be out of
Sync with exogenous zeitgebers such as destination time. The rhythms that dictate times for eating, sleeping, hormone regulation and body temperature no longer respond to the environment
The body can not immediately realign these rhythms and is therefore jet lagged
The SCN will need to entrain to the new environment which may take several days.
Shift works
Working at night requires you to be alert at time we are used to being asleep. This means the body clock endogenous pacemaker with be out of
Synchronisation with available cues from exogenous zeitgebers such as daylight. Backward rotations shifts cause the biggest disruption in circadian rhythms. A disruption in hormone (melatonin), lack of sleep (day time sleep more disrupted) and unhealthy eating (lead to irritability and decrease of alertness) habits and lack of physical activity all create an increase in risks of heart disease and cancer for shift workers.
