Magical thinking
Wishful thinking, common in children
Phobia
Persistent, pathological, unrealistic, intense fear of an object/ situation.
Obsession
Persistent recurrent idea, thought, impulse that cannot be eliminated from consciousness by logic or reasoning
Compulsion
Pathological need to act on an impulse that, if resisted , produces anxiety
Abstract thinking
Thinking characterized by the ability to grasp the essentials of the whole, to break a whole into its part . Example is humour
Concrete thinking
Actual thins, events and immediate experience rather than by abstraction
Flight of ideas
Ideas flowing into one’s mind. One thought after another
Often seen in mania
Circumstantiality
Patient tends to go into unnecessary details before communicating central idea but answers the question eventually.
Tangentiality
Oblique, digressive/irrelevant manner of speech. Central idea not communicated.
Loosening of association (loa)
-Schizophrenic thinking.
Unrelated ideas shift from one to another.
Derailment
Gradual/ sudden deviation in train of thought without blocking
Blocking
Abrupt interruption in train of thinking before a thought is finished
Incoherence
Communication that is disconnected, disorganized or incomprehensible
Word salad
Incoherent, essentially incomprehensible, mixture of words & phrases commonly
Clang association
Punning and rhyming very common in schizophrenia & mania.
