Disorders Of Auditory Comprehension Flashcards
The triangle model
Provides a framework to consider the interaction of phonological and semantic skills involved in auditory comprehension
Scott 2010
When people listened to spect rally inverted speech there was activation in the posterior superior temporal sulci
When intelligibility increased different areas of the superior temporal sulci became activated
Criticisms of the PALPA model
Arrows all go in one direction, too simplistic?
There is no lexical level, it assumes we know words because they are patterns of lexical representation
Hard to capture in a single box
Lack of invariance problem
When acoustic information comes in it is all different e,g, different accents. We have to break down the information and build it up again ourselves so we can understand it.
Jeff binder 2009
No one part of the brain has found to be responsible for comprehension. But damage to wernickes area likely to have comprehension difficulties.
Assessing auditory comprehension
Spoken word to picture matching Spoken sentence to picture matching Hearing Acoustic and phonological processing Semantics
Word deafness
Extremely rare Impaired auditory comprehension Impaired repetition of words and non words Fluent speech Impaired spelling to dictation Intact reading comprehension Intact reading production Intact written picture naming
Wernickes aphasia
Impaired auditory comprehension Impaired repetition Fluent speech Impaired spelling to dictation Impaired naming Impaired reading comprehension Impaired written comprehension
Transcortical sensory aphasia
Impaired auditory comprehension Intact repetition Fluent speech Intact spelling to dictation Impaired naming Impaired reading comprehension Impaired written picture naming
