Approaches To Aphasia Flashcards
Modularity
Theory that language components are modular computational systems that are functionally independent but each module relies on specialised input from each other
Fodor (1983)
Characteristics of modules:
Domain specific- responds to only one sort of input
Computationally autonomous-does not share general resources e.g. Attention with other modules
Informationally encapsulated - access to restricted and predetermined amount of information, carries out processing in isolation
Universality assumption
Structure of cognitive function is universal, no individual variation
. If there was individual variation then it would not be possible to make inferences from one person to another
Subtraction assumption
No new cognitive structure is created as a consequence of the lesion, impaired commit ice system is the same as a normal system but its operations are impaired.
A-FROM model (Kagan et al)
About quality of life, aphasia specific interpretation of the ICF
Client focuses
Find out about individuals perspective
Life participation approach
Focuses on engagement in life by strengthening participation in activities of choice
Tendency to draw towards group therapy
Cognitive neuropsychology approach
Looks at model of normal cognitive processing and compares brain damaged patients to this model. 3 basic assumptions:
Modularity
Universality
Subtraction
