Disorders of appetite Flashcards
Define polydipsia
extreme thirst
Define adipsia
Adipsia= a disease characterized by the absence of thirst even in the presence of body water depletion or salt excess
What is anorexia?
Anorexia= an eating disorder characterized by low weight
What is obesity?
definedas abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health (BMI over 30)
What is the name of the hormone responsible for the regulation of Osmolality?
ADH
How does ADH work and where is it stored?
- ADH is stored in the neurons in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary
- Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) induces water retention byincreasing the permeability of nephrons. Its influence on water permeability occurs primarily by regulating aquaporin 2 water channels in the distal tubules and collecting ducts of the kidney
If the plasma concentration of ADH is low will there be a water diuresis or an anti-diuresis?
There will be water diuresis
Which regions are sensory osmoreceptors found in the hypothalamus (2 answers)?
Organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis (OVLT)
Subfornical Organ (SFO)
What are some causes of primary polydipsia
- Psychogenic polydipsia
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Anorexia
- Anxiety
- Drug use
- Organ (brain) damage/ trauma
What conditions can leas to secondary polydipsia?
“Medical issues that disrupt any step in osmoregulation or alter ADH can cause secondary polydipsia”
- Cranial diabetes insipidus
- Type 2 diabetes
- nephrogenic diabetes insipidus
- Chronic kidney disease
- Chronic heart failure
- Medication: diueretics, laxatives
- Conn’s syndrome
Can you define the BMI for the condition “underweight”
Underweight= less than 18.5
Can you define the BMI for a “Healthy weight range”
Normal= 18.5 to 24.9
Can you define the BMI for the condition “Overweight”
Overweight= 25.0 to <30
Can you define the BMI for the condition “Obesity”
Obesity:
Class 1= 30 to < 35
Class 2= 35 to < 40
Class 3= BMI of 40 or higher.
