Disorder - characteristics - hemisphere Flashcards
Aphasia
- fluent
- nonfluent
impaired LEFT SIDE
fluent
= Wernicke’s aphasia
difficulty understanding speech
nonfluent
= Broca’s aphasia
difficulty producing speech
Apraxia
- ideomotor
impaired LEFT SIDE
- posterior left parietal lesion
- disruption of parietofrontal connections
- patients are unable to copy movements or make gestures
Aprosody
- auditory
impaired RIGHT SIDE
- severe limitation in interpretation of intonation and pitch
- monotonous speech + difficulty singing
Alexia
- pure
think - dyslexia
impaired LEFT SIDE
- impaired ability to read aloud
- understanding the meaning of written words
Agraphia
impaired LEFT side
- impaired ability to write
Alcalculia
impaired LEFT side
- left parietal lesions
-> impaired a bility to perform mathematical calculations
Object at the right side of the visual field is named
but object at the left visual field isn’t
impaired communication between LH and RH
- information from the left visual field can’t reach the RH via the CORPUS CALLOSUM
Severe limitation in movements within spatial patterns
impaired RIGHT side
-> can’t walk in a straight line / grasp at objects
Words spoken into the left ear are not recognized
Words spoken into the right ear are recognized
impaired communication between LH + RH
- > words from left ear can’t reach LH via corpus callosum
- > words from right ear directly processed by LH
Hands are unable to work together
- > left hand doesn’t know where right hand is
- > vice versa
impaired communication between LH + RH
-> one hemisphere isn’t receiving info about the task from other hemisphere
Spatial tasks are executed poorly when objects are presented to the right visual field - LH
But not when objects are presented to the left visual field - RH
impaired communication between LH + RH
-> impaired ability to recognize spatial relations + fore/background + geometrical ratios
Neglect of left sided perception/surroundings
impaired RIGHT side
- right parietal lesions
-> neglect of left side of the visual field
Severe limitation in mental figure rotation
impaired RIGHT side
-> inability to recognize objects given from an unusual perspective/angle
Severely impaired recall - memory - for what has been said
impaired LEFT side
-> impaired immediate recall
