What are the most common causes of disease?
Poor husbandry
Poor diet
Poor basic hygiene
Inadequate accommodation
Incorrect environment - temp, ventilation, lighting
Incorrect handling
Injuries and cuts
What is the diagnosis and treatment for external parasites?
Ticks and mites can be seen on the body.
Treatment is ivermectin for 8 weeks.
What is the diagnosis and treatment for internal parasites?
Regular faecal egg worm counts should be made.
Can be prevented and controlled by worming twice a year.
Wormer = Panacur 10% = 1ml/kg body weight.
What is metabolic bone disease caused by and what are the symptoms?
Caused by incorrect diet and lack of Vitamin D3 from UV light, therefore cannot utilise calcium in their diet to make strong bones.
Symptoms:
Bones soft, swollen, deformed, or fractured.
Unable to eat or walk properly.
What is Red leg disease and what are the symptoms?
Common in frogs and fish.
Bacterial disease contagious and transmitted by infected water.
Symptoms:
Red area that gets worse and skin eventually sloughs off.
Less active.
Lose weight.
Dull in colour.
What is Mouth Rot (Stomatitis)?
Bacterial disease common in lizards and snakes.
Caused by poor husbandry and injury.
Bacteria, virus or fungus may then invade the injury and set up an infection.
What is Mycobacterial Disease and what are the symptoms?
A water borne bacterial disease common in amphibians.
Symptoms:
Small skin nodules or ulcerations
Abnormal behaviour
Pneumonia
Stop feeding
What is Pneumonia and what are the symptoms and what is the treatment?
Thick mucous discharge associated with severe pneumonia.
Symptoms:
Gaping mouth
Coughing
Wheezing
Must be treated ASAP with antibiotics.
What is Saprolegniasis and what are the symptoms?
A common fungal infection in reptiles, amphibians and fish. Cotton like growths on the skin, shells, or gills.
Caused by handling if mucous on the skin is removed by dry hand or nylon net.
Symptoms:
Skin underneath inflamed or ulcerated.
Become weak and thin.
What is dry shell rot and how is it treated?
Fungal infection.
Treated with anti-fungal drug such as Nystatin.
What is Herpesvirus and what are the symptoms?
A viral disease common in snakes.
Causes regurgitation in boas a few days after feeding.
Symptoms:
Head tilt.
Tremors.
Paralysis.
Death.
What is Salmonella and Liver Disease?
Common in lizards.
Hepatic lipidosis caused by high fat diet or when adults are fed mainly insects.
