May cause weakness in transverse ligament if C1, allowing odontoid process to cause myelopathy. Doesn’t effect thoracic and lumbar spines

A

Describe Ankylosing spondylitis

A

Typical onset is late teens to 20s, is insidious. Pain is increased at rest, decreased with activity. (Opposite of mechanical back pain)

A

Ext exercises 3x/day, swimming, sleeping with flat pillows, NSAIDs

What causes gout?

A

Utica acid crystals are deposited in the joint. WBCs attack and release prostaglandins, causing inflammation

What is Complex Regional Pain Syndrome?

A

Pain is out of proportion to injury, with symptoms of autonomic dysregulation (redness, swelling, skin changes). Type 1 is formerly known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy, while type 2 is the same symptoms with nerve involvement as well.

What can PT do for CRPS?

A

Mobilization, compression, and distraction are helpful. Desensitization programs, sympathetic modulation, and aquatic programs may be beneficial.
