What is this a presentation of?
Elderly/debilitated patient dehydrated with poor oral hygiene, painful diffuse swelling of gland, fever.
Sialadenitis
What is the management of sialadenitis?
Antibiotics and good oral hygiene
What is this a presentation of?
Pain and tense swelling during/after meals, palpable stone at the floor of the mouth.
Sialolithiasis
What is the management of sialolithiasis?
Plain x-ray, small stone pass on their own, large stones need surgical excision.
What is sialolithiasis?
Salivary gland calculus (majority in submandibular gland)
What is the most common location and type for salivary gland tumours?
- Parotid gland
- Benign pleomorphic adenomas
(50% of submandibular gland tumours are malignant)
What is this a presentation of?
Hard, fixed pass +/- pain, lymph node ulceration, no change in size of lump when eating, associated CN VII palsy.
- Malignant parotid gland tumour (mucoepidermoid tumour)
