Discovering cells Flashcards
Cell theory
Cell theory a widely accepted explanation of the relationship between cells and living things
What does the cell theory state
- All living things are composed of cells.
- Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things.
- All cells are reproduced from other cells.
What does multicellular mean
Made of many cells
What does unicellular mean
Made of a single cell
Specialized cells
Perform specific functions that benefit the entire MULTICELLULAR organism
(Nerve cell)
Tissue
A group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function
(Nervous tissue)
Organ
Many different types of tissues that function together
Heart
Organ system
A group of organs that work together to perform a major function
(Nervous system)
Organism
The biggest level of organization in multicellular organisms
Human
Cell
The basic units of structure and function in living things
What was the invention that lead to the discovery of cells
Microscope
Robert Hooke contribution
Used a microbe to look at a thin slice of cork. He called the “small rooms” in the cork cells. He saw dead cells.
Antony van Leeuwenhoek
First person to see living cells. He saw them in bacteria.
Mattias Schleiden contribution
Concluded that all plants are made of cells
Theodor Schwann
He concluded that all animals are made of cells
