Chemical Compounds Flashcards
Compound
2 or more elements combined chemically in a specific ratio of portion
Organic compound
A compound that contains carbon
Element
Any substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means.
Inorganic compound
Doesn’t contain carbon
Carbohydrates
Energy rich, organic compounds such as starch or sugar that your body uses to get energy
Lipid
An organic compound such as fat, oil or wax that cells use to store energy for later use.
Proteins
Large, organic molecules that are the building blocks of cells and living organisms. Much of cells structure and function depends on proteins.
Enzymes
A group of proteins that speed up chemical reactions in living things
Nucleic acid
Very long, organic molecules that contain the instructions that carry out all of the functions of life
DNA
The genetic material that carries information about an organism that is passed from parent to offspring. This information directs a cells function.
