Pause
A temporary stop or rest.
False starts
Occurs when the speaker says something then rearranges what they say. e.g. I think he’s, he told me he’s glad he has one of those.
Repetition
Using a word, clause or phrase more than once in a short passage.
Repairs
A form of correction, typical in spontaneous speech
Openings
The beginnings of dialogue which often contain formulaic expressions. e.g. “excuse me”
Closings
The endings of dialogue which often contain formulaic expressions.e.g. “thanks a lot”
Adjacency pairs
Adjacent turns in spoken discourse which relate to each other, such as questions and answers or greetings and responses.
Overlapping speech
Two or more speakers talking simultaneously.
Interrogative tags
Little expressions, such as “isn’t it?” and “will she?”, which turn statements into questions.
Discourse particles
Short expressions or words which indicate a change of topic. e.g. “anyway”, “yeah”, “well”.
Code switching
Moving between two languages, dialects or registers e.g. Talking while switching between Japanese and English.
Paralinguistic features
Features of spoken communication that do not involve words e.g. body language, gestures, facial expressions, tone and pitch of voice.
Formulaic Expressions
Language that follows a set pattern.
Ellipsis
The deletion of items in a sentence because they either appear elsewhere or can be reconstructed from the context. E.g. Wanna go for lunch?
